What is a Keratin Treatment?

Keratin is a protein compound found in skin, hair, and nails which actually strengthens your hair shaft and makes your hair more resilient to breakage. It increases the diameter of the hair fiber, making your hair look and feel luxurious. Basically, a stylist will shampoo your hair with a clarifying shampoo to remove any impurities, then apply a keratin product to your hair carefully avoiding getting the product on your scalp. There are many versions available to salons, some containing more formaldehyde than others.

The treatment remains in the hair as it’s blow-dried and then flat-ironed. How long the treatment lasts depends on how often you wash your hair. The average lasting time is usually about 3 months. We highly recommend using the appropriate shampoo and conditioner that are infused with Keratin to help make the treatment last longer. The keratin products that are manufactured today almost all have some formaldehyde to preserve their products, in combination with organic oils and buffers. Typically the treatment takes about 2 hours and now you can wash your hair the next day it is all up to you if you feel that your hair does not need to be washed then don’t. The longer you wait to wash it the longer it will last. Unlike some hair straightening treatments, Keratin treatments can be done on color-treated hair. They work well on people (men get them, too) with wavy to tight curly hair. If you are sick of fighting the frizz you’ll love the results from the keratin treatments they get rid of the frizz even in humid or rainy weather. In closing, I would highly recommend getting your hair done by someone who specializes in keratin treatments.
